Variations between SE and CE

Canadian English is the first language of 77% of Canadians and is spoken fluently by over 86% of the population. 

Features

Phonological:

  • Younger Canadians tend to say 'zee' for the letter Z, whilst older generations pronounce it 'zed'.
  • In words like 'adult' and 'composite' the stress is usually on the first syllable, as in SE.
  • Pecan is usually /ˈpiːkæn/, as with the SE pronunciation. 


Grammatical:

  • Canadian and British English share idioms like 'in hospital' and 'at university'
